Concrete on the North Bank of the Peace River
Charlotte Harbor is a waterfront community where water covers more ground than land, and that is the first thing concrete contractors in Charlotte Harbor have to plan around. Of its 5 square miles, about 2.7 are water, nearly 54 percent, and the community sits on the north bank of the Peace River, the main tidal inlet to the Charlotte Harbor estuary, at about 7 feet of elevation. We pour and replace driveways, patios, walks, pool decks and small slabs here, and we repair concrete that has settled or broken.
Where Charley came ashore
On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley made its first mainland landfall at the mouth of Charlotte Harbor. Eighteen years later Hurricane Ian brought catastrophic wind damage to Charlotte County, and a private station near Port Charlotte recorded a 132 mph gust. Each storm was followed by months of rebuilding, and the trucks, lifts and dumpsters that came with it were hard on old driveways and walks. A lot of our Charlotte Harbor work is finishing that cycle: replacing the concrete that was cracked during repairs once the roof and walls are done.
Low, wet ground
At 7 feet above sea level and surrounded by river and harbor, much of Charlotte Harbor has a high water table, and the ground can stay soft through the rainy season. A slab poured on soft fill will settle at the edges and crack. We dig out poor material, compact a solid base and pour only when it is firm. We also slope every slab so water leaves it quickly. Standing water on concrete in this climate means mildew, slippery surfaces and, over time, base erosion.
Charlotte County right-of-way work
Charlotte Harbor is unincorporated, so any driveway work in the road right-of-way needs a Charlotte County right-of-way permit. The county lists installation, resurfacing, widening and swale-to-culvert changes as permitted work. Its standards set residential drives at 10 to 24 feet wide and require a culvert under all driveways, with a concrete apron of 4 inches of 3,000 PSI fiber-mesh concrete on a 4-inch compacted shell base. We prepare the drawing and pour to that standard.
Smaller households, smaller jobs
The 2020 census counted 2,671 housing units and 1,962 households here, and nearly 48 percent of households were people living alone. The median age was 66. So a lot of our work in Charlotte Harbor is on a smaller scale: a new walk to the mailbox, a patio off the lanai, a pad for a generator, steps and a landing at the front door, or replacing two or three broken driveway panels instead of the whole drive.
Next to the state park and the bridges
Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park, about 42,000 acres with 70 miles of shoreline, sits nearby, and US 41 crosses the Peace River here on the Barron Collier and Gilchrist bridges into Punta Gorda. We cover both sides of the river.

Charlotte Harbor Questions
Can you replace only the broken panels on my driveway?
Yes, if the rest of the drive is level and the base is sound. We saw-cut the broken panels out, repair the base and pour new sections. If many panels have dropped, a full replacement usually makes more sense.
Why did my patio settle along one edge?
On low, wet ground the base under a slab edge can soften or wash out, especially near downspouts. We check the base and fix the water source before we pour again.
Do you need a county permit for a new walk on my lot?
A walk entirely on your own lot usually does not reach the right-of-way. Anything that touches the road, the swale or a driveway apron does, and we handle that county permit for you.
